UNISON, takes learning seriously and offers a range lifelong learning opportunities for its members. There are a range of courses available to you as a member to support you in your personal development. Whether it’s brushing up your study skills, improving your English or testing the water for university study, then there is a course here for you. Most are free to UNISON members.

Develop your skills with Return to Learn

Return to Learn (R2L) is not about going back to school. It’s a course specially designed for adults who have been away from learning for a long time. There are no exams. The course is delivered on behalf of UNISON by the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA). You can also get a certificate at the end of it. Past students from a variety of work backgrounds have found it helped them at work and at home with things like report writing, case notes, job applications and of course the children’s homework.

R2L gives you confidence in four key areas:

  • writing
  • investigating and research
  • analysing and problem solving
  • working with numbers
  • basic computer skills (where facilities are available).

Learn from experience with Women’s Lives

Women’s Lives is a course specifically designed for women who have been away from learning for a long time but would now like to take up new learning opportunities. There are no tests or exams. You can also get a certificate at the end of it. You will join a regular study group that meets once a week in the evening at a local venue with a female tutor who will run the study group, help and advise you and give you feedback. The sessions are designed to be informal and friendly.

Women’s Lives looks at issues of interest to women and draws on your own experiences at work and home. While doing this it will develop your skills and give you confidence in:

  • writing
  • investigating and research
  • analysing and problem solving.

Improve your English with English for You

English for You will make it easier for you to talk to your work colleagues, understand workplace health and safety issues and understand your union. It will help you to develop your self-confidence at work and within your community. You can also get a certificate at the end of it. You will join a small study group that meets once a week in the evening at a local venue with an experienced tutor to help and advise you.

English for You is for any UNISON member whose main language is not English. It will help you with:

  • speaking and listening
  • reading and writing
  • vocabulary
  • punctuation and grammar.

Skills for Life

In UNISON we understand Skills for Life to be about everyday English and practical maths. English includes skills such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Maths includes time estimation, using money, completing time sheets, understanding payslips and calculating annual leave.

Many adults in the UK have difficulties with these skills, in 2011 NIACE undertook a survey on behalf of UNISON to which over 27 000 members responded. This survey showed that significant numbers of UNISON members find:

  • writing more difficult than reading
  • Maths more difficult than English
  • speaking in a group difficult.
